E. 6th Street Reconstruction Project

Construction is underway on East 6th Street!

East 6th Street will remain closed to thru traffic until 8/22/2025 along with the roadway crossings at Kalispell Ave., Sommers Ave., and Park Ave.

The contractor is required to keep either Pine Ave. or Columbia Ave. open at all times.

Project Overview

East 6th Street is a primary route to and from the Whitefish High School and Muldown Elementary School. With the recent reconstruction of Muldown, East 6th Street has seen a considerable increase in traffic, which the roadway is not equipped to safely manage. Due to these traffic challenges combined with the street’s current inadequate means of providing safe pedestrian/bicycle paths and snow removal options, the City has deemed East 6th Street a priority for re-design.

The City of Whitefish is planning to reconstruct East 6th Street, from Spokane Avenue to Pine Avenue, with additional sidewalk upgrades along Pine Avenue from East 5th Street to East 6th Street. The reconstruction project will involve the design and construction of approximately 1,780 feet of roadway and path design along East 6th Street and approximately 800 feet of path along Pine Avenue.

The City has selected HDR Engineering, Inc. to complete the civil engineering and assist the City with project management, public involvement. To date there have been four project newsletters, four public meetings, and numerous individual conversations and meetings with residents and property owners.

The project was advertised for bid in late February 2025 and was awarded to Watson Excavating, Inc. in April. Construction will take place from May thru August 2025.
